Looking for the best travel purse out there? Look no further! Our complete list contains everything from anti-theft to cross body bags for women in 2018.
You’d probably agree with me when I say
Nobody wants to travel with let alone stand around holding an uncomfortable bag.
Well, the only issue is finding the “perfect” travel purse as there are hundreds to choose from.
Most travelers have a preference when it comes to the type of bag they like to carry onto the plane. It could be a cross body purse, a tote bag, a small weekend bag, or a backpack. Check out our guide for picking the right kind here.
Regardless of what you choose, it should be something that can also be used when they reach their final destination.
A good travel purse has to be spacious (plenty of room for necessities), look stylish, possess anti-theft features and remains highly functional, while still being easy to carry. There is no reason for someone to be carrying something around that ends up being 30 pounds when all you do at airports is move from one line to the next.
Our 11 top travel purses & anti-theft bags
After multiple trips and research, I’ve shortlisted my favorite travel purses which you can buy now. Many of these offer a lot of Anti-theft features so you can travel with peace of mind!
- Zippered Organizer
- Removable LED light
- RFID blocking card slots
- Cable-Reinforced Cut-Proof Shoulder Strap
This travel purse is not only an amazing carry on option because of all of the slots for your cards and passport, but it’s also perfect for big city travel. It has slash proof straps and body panels, which means that thieves won’t be able to get into your bag or cut it off of your shoulder (which unfortunately can happen in super crowded areas). Plus, all the compartments lock which can really save you from pickpockets. On the flip side, it can take a long time for you to access your belongings which can be a bit of a pain.
- Multi-functional pockets
- Cross-body bag
- Available in two colors
This travel purse is very spacious and has an awesome padded pocket that is large enough for an iPad or Kindle. Plus, it has several other interior pockets so you can keep your belongings organized. We found that the bag was really lightweight and the material held up after several months of use. The only things that we found to be annoying were the buttons. They made it hard to access the outer pocket quickly, which can be bad when you’re in crowded places.
- Available in 13 colors
- Super lightweight
- Comes with an RFID blocking wristlet
- Comes in 2 sizes – the larger option is super spacious!
This bag is made of nylon so if you get caught in a rainstorm, you have nothing to worry about as it happens to be water resistant. The Baggallini is extremely light and quite ideal for taking your toiletries, iPods, tablets, documents are more. The zippers are well made with plenty of pockets, however, you won’t be quite fit your phone in the outer compartments. The RFID blocking wristlet is handy although it’s meant only for your cards (not your phones) and its good in situations where you opt to leave your bag in the car or in the hotel. The exterior can divide opinion as some find it slightly rough. the construction is very good & this is a bag that will definitely last you a long time. It’s pretty easy to clean which we liked. Worth noting that the bright colors, like the Papaya, can accumulate dust easier.
- Available in 2 colors
- Luxurious, high quality & very functional
- Water-resistant exterior
- Quite light
- A bit on the pricey side
If your after a luxurious bag that is built to last through all your adventures then the Tumi Voyageur is definitely the one for you. Its highly functional & light with plenty of pockets all the usual gear. The phone pouch is well protected & easy to reach. The exterior not only looks good but is also water resistant. There’s pretty much a pocket for everything for combs, lipstick, pens & even smaller iPads. The Voyageur series has matching TUMI suitcases too which you can purchase.
The strap as you’d expect is adjustable with the zippers easy to use & made to last. In terms of quality if you’re looking for a step up from the Baggallini we listed above this would be it. For the price, you would definitely expect durability & this is one of the better-built ones out there, not just for travel. We thought the price was a tad high but many users remarked that the quality was definitely worth the price.
- Available in 4 colors
- Phone pocket is safer but harder to access
- Adjustable straps but shorter on the 2.0
- Material quality is very good
The piazza daybag 2.0 is definitely one for those that love to stay organized. This bag has several pockets, pouches, and compartments so you can find a place for all of your necessities. It not only makes for a super travel bag, but it’s also perfect for everyday use. The 1st version was certainly one of our favorites as it featured on the list too but the 2nd is different but definitely has its charms. The first of those is that we thought the material was much better. The zippers are quite sturdy but the seams do get frayed over time. The adjustable strap is a bit shorter on this version which we didn’t quite like.
This travel purse has a couple of slots for you to store water bottles or your phone for easy access on the outside of the bag. The phone pocket definitely divides opinion among many users as some have noted that despite it being closer to your/ more secure it’s harder to access. The RFID blocking feature and many internal compartments (some hidden under a flap, makes this one of the more secure bags out there.
- Many anti-theft features
- Weighs about 15 oz
- Available in 4 colors
- Great for carrying phones & essentials
- Holds 5L volume
- Slightly heavier than bags with no Anti-theft features
Pacsafe are known for providing great anti-theft travel gear and this bag emphasizes function over fashion. If peace of mind is what you crave then your search can end right here. Although not the largest bag around, cash, keys, passports, lip gloss, IDs, phones etc., can be carried quite easily. There is an RFID safe compartment as well where you can even fit a loose change purse if you like. A stainless steel mesh is present in the fabric to prevent against slash & run theft. You can even lock the zippers too! A downside is that if you do like shopping around with a water bottle then this purse might not serve your needs well. Also, the shoulder strap isn’t the smoothest on your skin but I was happy with the trade-off.
- Available in 3 colors
- Slashproof mesh & straps
- RFID blocking for main compartment
- Practical & versatile design
The Pacsafe CS400 is one of our favorites since it provides a combination of excellent safety features, well-designed interiors & capacity. Also, it doesn’t lack aesthetical appeal, something that most anti-theft bags seem to lack. As far as travel purses go it doesn’t get better than the CS400 in terms of security. The wire reinforced strap & the flexible steel wire mesh ensures the bag is slash proof. It also has removable shoulder padding which can make this a bit easier to wear. A strap no matter how sturdy, if rough, can be impractical. The bag isn’t too heavy weighing just under 2 pounds. This is usually an issue for anti-theft solutions but the CS400 has a nice balance. Design wise there is a zippered compartment on the exterior and pouches for staying organized on the inside. The CS400 is a tad pricey compared to other solutions like the Travelon but if peace of mind is what you are after then the PacSafe is a safe bet.
- Available in four sleek colors
- Made from waterproof nylon
- Adjustable and comfortable straps
If you have back problems, the best bag that you can carry while traveling is a backpack. Backpacks allow you to evenly distribute weight on both of your shoulders instead of putting too much pressure on one side of your body. This bag goes a step further as it’s designed with a padded back and straps for optimal comfort. And our favorite thing about it was that you can wear it as a cross-body bag, or you can unzip the straps to wear it as a backpack. Keep in mind that this is a smaller backpack. It’s around the same size as a conventional travel purse. So if you’re looking to store a ton of stuff, you’ll need to find one that’s bigger. But don’t worry; this size has two different zip pockets and a decently sized main compartment where you can store all of your essentials for exploring.
- Available in 22 color variants
- Slash-resistant construction
- RFID blocking
- Comfortable strap length
- Not the lightest mini around but still reasonably light
Good things indeed come in small sizes. This second offering by Travelon is an awesome travel purse for the minimalist. Other than being very compact, security is its main positive. The straps are slash proof & so is the body panel itself with a grill type design inside the lining to prevent thieves from destroying the bottom of the bag for its contents. It has RFID blocking just like any other Anti-theft variant. To get a sense of its size, you can easily fit a Kindle into it. The main section is also lockable to top it all off.
Coming to comfort, the nylon fabric is not too rough and doesn’t score too many points for how it feels. There are 22 variants with some differing in size, not just color so be sure to check when you buy. The one we’ve shown above is 8.5″ wide & 9.5″ wide. There are easy access pockets on the front & the rear which many users found to be very useful for storing ticket stubs & things.
- Available in six colors
- Made with high-quality materials
- Very lightweight
Finding a high-quality handbag that doesn’t weigh a lot when empty, can be tough. This bag weighs less than it’s competitors, meaning you can carry a lot more in it before it even starts to feel heavy. We did find that the bag didn’t seem to be the same size as advertised, but it didn’t make a huge difference. We were still able to store a lot inside even though it was smaller than we expected it to bed. You can fit a large wallet, passport, cell phone, make-up, and more inside of it.
- Available in four different colors
- Made with durable material
- Has nine pockets
- Comes with a one-year warranty
Messenger bags are really great options for a travel purse. They often come equipped with extra storage pockets, and this bag comes with seven zipped pockets and two external side pockets that don’t have a zipper (perfect for storing your cell phone for easy access). The durable bag is multi-functional, allows you to stay organized, and can even be used every day. The vintage style messenger bag is not only a great purse for women but is a great bag for men as well. It’s a great size for carrying your necessities for a long flight onto the plane.
How Anti-theft travel purses help travelers
As you can tell from the list above Travelon & Pacsafe are the two main brands providing anti-theft bags for women which have a host of security features. There are plenty of bags in the market that provide some but not all anti-theft features. At this point, it’s quite natural to ask if these features do really matter & if it is worth sacrificing on looks for something practical. The answer is… “It depends”
Where & how frequently you travel will shape what you decide to go for. Nonetheless, there are stats that may surprise a few. About 3800 people out of every 100K are victims of theft in Sweden according to the UN office on Crime. The US hovers around the 1700 mark as well. Whilst, you might not be solving any underlying issues with regards to theft you can definitely protect yourself with a great bag. Here are some of the most common safety features found on Anti-theft bags.
Brands achieve this through a variety of methods. Some make use of a lightweight stainless steel mesh to ensure the body of the bag can’t be cut or slashed off your body. Others are made from or reinforced with a polyethylene variant which combined with a high-speed knitting process results in a robust solution. Kevlar is also another material that travel purses are made with from time to time.
Shoulder straps also cut proof thanks to stainless steel cables which are inside the fabric layer. These do a very good job against slash n grab thieves. You sometimes see mesh solutions employed in shoulder straps too but the cons outweigh the pros with those bags. The mesh can cause the strap fabric to rip and damage your skin.
Radio (R) Frequency (F) Identification (ID) blocking prevents thieves from skimming data off your credit or debit cards. With this data, one could assume your identity and make purchases too. Despite the debate raging for years as to whether RFID skimming is a threat or not, this is a pretty handy feature to have in a purse or wallet. RFID blocking materials are usually those that are poor conductors so materials like Aluminium or Carbon Fibre are quite commonly used. If the bag that you have chosen doesn’t have RFID blocking capability then you can either wrap your carbs in an Aluminum foil or use a more elegant solution like an RFID sleeve or pouch like the one seen with the Baggallini.
Zip Lock Clips
Whilst this may seem like a simple addition it can come in handy to prevent your zippers from being stealthily opened in a hurry when you are turned away.
As you can tell by now there are a number of different bags & types and I hope this list has helped you make a concrete decision. Always make sure you keep in mind things like safety features, pocket count and the likes as they need to double up after you reach your desired destination.
We hope the list helps you pick the right travel purse for your budget. It’s important to keep a check on that whilst you sift through the features and try your best to go for an anti-theft option. Also, if you think we’ve missed a bag or purse on our list which you think is great, let us know!
